As governments and society at large react to fears of COVID19, economic impacts have already been widespread. Most retail shops have closed - some owners have faced financial ruin and others have raised debt to continue paying landlords - even choosing to board-up their stores to wait out the storm. With bars, restaurants and places of entertainment closed, most people are now tiring of what feels like an extended winter hibernation. Just a month into 'lockdown' in Toronto and the city's livability has dramatically decreased... Sidewalk line-ups of grocery shoppers rob the in-store experience of pleasure, and isolated citizens in need of fresh air are increasingly being rushed away from parks - police are obviously struggling to understand and enforce what will keep people safe in open spaces. All of this should not establish a new paradigm for urban experience in our city. Though we risk becoming accustomed to such lifestyle restrictions, it is important to open our minds to what we want the New Normal to be when 'this' all ends. It is with this thinking that StartWell is launching a new content series and podcast to be published through our Digital Magazine and via iTunes + Spotify. This week we released two episodes of 'A New Normal' and will continue to speak to local entrepreneurs and innovators in attempts to chronicle their experiences whilst hopefully relating optimism that may inspire your own vision for the near future.
